Helix Angle Calculator

with shim selection tool

Use the software on this page to calculate the helix angle and get recommendations for the most suitable shim (also known as anvil) based on the threading insert you are using.

📱 iOS App

Make offline calculations directly from your iPhone. The Helix Angle Calculator is now available on the App Store!

Manual Method

You can also manually calculate the helix angle and find the right shim using our diagram and table available on the Helix Angle in Thread Turning page or by downloading our PDF guide.

Instructions for Calculating the Helix Angle

Security Notice: SmiCut is not responsible for the application of these calculations in your machining operations. Use this tool at your own risk.

Thread Diameter: An approximate value is usually sufficient for selecting a suitable shim. For a quick estimate, use the major diameter. For greater accuracy, use the pitch diameter or average the major and minor diameters.

Multi-Start Threads: Multiply the pitch by the number of starts to get the lead, then use that lead to calculate the correct helix angle.

Use the Appropriate Anvil for Optimal Machining: The standard holder for triangular inserts has a preset angle of 1.5°. If you need to adapt the tool for a different helix angle, you can switch to a suitable shim to match the thread’s helix angle and ensure optimal machining.
